VIDEO COMING SOON
Through movement and visual homages to mythical and historical artists and activists, the film constructs a new, remixed language of libratory sisterhood for our time. Conceived of as a cinematic, embodied prayer, it is both a spiritual ward against the violence of our time and a political satire of the brute forces of white supremacy and patriarchy. The film is set to an experimental hip-hop track with lyrics adapted from biblical texts and layered with archival sound bytes. Largely inspired by Audre Lorde’s visionary text Use of the Erotic, the film quite literally brings this text to life through an ethereal pantheon of non-binary deities who lip sync Lorde’s words.
The film is a visual odyssey is anchored with a dance ritual by “The Cult of Judith,” performed by an ensemble of dancers. The film opens with the haunting voice of Dr. Blasey Ford in a soundbyte of her testimony in the Kavanaugh hearings. From there, The Cult of Judith takes us on a surreal journey that dialogues with symbolic worlds, that of disembodiment and violence juxtaposed with the world of sensuality and mysticism (Lorde’s pantheon). The improvisational choreography weaves together gestures of traditional Jewish ritual as the women move through somatic states of grief to joy, embodying the complexity of anger and feminine identity. The film culminates in The Cult of Judith’s ritual meal, a nod to The Dinner Table, by Judy Chicago.
